Jess: I have only read "Stone of the Stars" so far, and I don't know when I'll get to read the other two, so I will start with this one. I was expecting to be highly disappointed with this book, since it got mostly so-so or bad reviews elsewhere. Maybe this was a case of low standards, but I actually enjoyed this book. It can be somewhat derivative (like the prologue sounds remarkable like the "Silmarillion"), but there's enough new elements to help you overlook that. And even though you might find this book in the regular SF/F section, this author writes mostly young adult, and it shows. Not a bad thing though. There's a couple plot twists that you see coming (especially if you look in the back of the book), so if you hate that kind of predictability, stay away. The story can be fun and exciting though, and the story itself is incredibly vivid. Give this book a shot, you might enjoy it. I look forward to reading the next two. 8/1/01 NEWS: "Stone of the Stars" is available in mass market paperback. "Empire" and "Archons" are currently available in trade paperback. |
