Trickster's Game Jess: This book was really a disappointment for me. It looked so good, got great reviews elsewhere, and its possible it was just me. I could just not get into this book, no matter how hard I tried. The rhythm of it was way off- 20 pages in I was ready for an ending. I felt like Campbell was pushing me too far, teasing me with a possible ending (but we all know its not going to happen with 100 pages to go). Not to mention I was completely confused. Even by the end of the book I wasn't sure what happened. The premise was simple enough. Think pagan seasonal rituals, and what would have happened if the seasons didn't turn. But Campbell goes farther than that with alternate worlds that are poorly explained or just ridiculous. Reading about Chaos (one of the worlds) made me feel like I was on an acid trip a la Alice in Wonderland. The book finally got me interested towards the end, but by that point it had twenty pages to go. It was a gripping conclusion, but not enough to redeem this book in my eyes. But hey, I can see where some people might enjoy this book- it can be clever at times, and the concept is interesting. I see hope for the next book in this series, but not a lot. 6/27/05 |
