Black Magician Trilogy Jess: This is the series that got me started on fantasy (thank you, Trudi!). It kind of reminded me of Harry Potter in the first book, since its about a poor girl who finds out she's an incredibly talented magician. I know it sounds cliché, but when you read this series, it doesn't feel like that. By the third book, the story goes in a completely different direction that you would never expect, but even up until that point the books are incredibly engrossing (not because of action, which is mostly in the third book as well, but you attach yourself to Sonea, the heroine). And yes, there's romance, but I'm not telling you about it ;) I'm completely unashamed that by the end of "The High Lord" I was sobbing. The only complaint I have is that in "The Novice" one of the characters figures out he's gay, and I kept getting the feeling that Canavan was trying to teach me a lesson. I don't mind homosexual characters, but the topic wasn't handled very well, and she could have done without it. But its such a minor blip to me in such a fabulous series, and this remains on my top five list. 5/23/05 NEWS: Canavan's new series, "Age of the Five Gods," will start with "Priestess of the White" and is scheduled for release in January 2006, in mass market paperback. She is also working on a prequel and a sequel to the "Black Magician" trilogy. |
