Jess: Wow. That's how I would sum up this series. Easily in my top five. Carey has everything you could hope for and executes each one perfectly: political intrigue, romance, magic, seduction, world building and history. At first I had trouble with this series, since the first ten pages are kind of goofy (plus its written in the first person, and I used to hate that- boy did that change). I am so glad I kept going, because after that I couldn't put it down. This is the kind of series even someone who doesn't like fantasy would enjoy. Even though its a wee bit on the dirty side, I've had so many men rave about it that I've begun to recommend it to everyone. If you haven't read this series, immediately make your way to the nearest bookstore (or, even better, just click the pictures), and purchase all three (trust me, you'll be happy you have them on hand). Fantastic! NEWS: The "Imriel" saga, a sequel to this series, is due out in June 2006 in hardcover. The first book is tentatively titled "Kushiel's Scion," although on amazon its titled "Imriel" and the date is wrong. Karen: I hate to gush, ok, I love to gush, and "Banewreaker" affords me an excellent chance to do so. For those of you familiar with Jacqueline Carey’s wonderful Kushiel trilogy, I want to assure you that this new book will not disappoint! It has all of the political intrigue and lovely prose of Kushiel in addition to a slightly more exciting fantasy world. This epic tale also involves gods and goddesses, but they are more involved in the day to day life of their realms. Another positive aspect of this novel is that it is morally ambiguous; neither side in the book’s conflict is depicted as being totally right or wrong. Add a simply yummy darkly romantic hero to all of that and you have a winner. My only problem with this book was the, so far, anemic romance, but hopefully that will warm up in book two. So, please believe me, this book is definitely a worthwhile read. 05/30/05 NEWS: "Banewreaker" is currently available in mass market paperback, and Godslayer is available in hardcover. |
