Artefacts of Power

Jess:  I have some serious mixed feelings about this series. I got into it right away, and didn't stop reading until the end, which is a good thing. But sometimes the action just goes way too fast, and I'm left questioning what the heck just happened, particularly at the very end of "Dhiammara," the final book. There's also a lot of loose ends as well as a lot of needless information, which is particularly frustrating (why couldn't she have used that page space to clarify?). The romance is irritating as well, but I can't elaborate without ruining the story. But the world she builds is completely fascinating, and the lesser characters are absolutely intriguing. You're introduced to a lot of seemingly unconnected characters, and they all tie together in the end. So in summary, this book has many redeeming qualities, but if you are a pickier reader then don't pick this series up. 6/4/05

The Shadowleague

Jess: This is Furey's second series, and my particular favorite. For those of you who read her "Artefacts" series, you'll be happy to learn there's a few references to it here, but nothing too exciting. If you haven't read it, its not necessary to read "Artefacts" first.  There's very little romance here since its more of a friendship thing, and I found it more enjoyable than the incredibly irritating romance of "Artefacts." Once again, you are introduced to a multitude of characters that will all meet up somehow, but you won't get lost since you meet them gradually. There's also a nice amount of comedy in stark contrast with some of the darker elements of the book, but stops short of making the story seem more real. This series is enjoyable and satisfying, but still misses the mark in a few places. Give it a shot though, you might like it more than I did. 6/4/05
