Claidi Journals Karen: This wonderful series by acclaimed fantasy author Tanith Lee is a brilliantly beautiful tale of a teenage girl’s journey of discovery. Yes, this is classified as young adult, but the main characters, Claidi and Argul are about eighteen and there is a very strong romantic element. Claidi and Argul spend all four books trying to figure out a very intriguing conspiracy set in motion before their births by the mysterious sorceress Ustareth. The magic is mostly driven by technology, but the major protagonists and antagonists are born special, in a planned pregnancy sort of way. Most of their births came about through a careful breeding program instigated by Ustareth. You will love the intricately detailed fantasy world created by Lee for these books, populated with creatures and technology that really in no way relates to our world. Claidi and Argul are completely sympathetic characters who you will absolutely adore and worry over. This series is truly a great accomplishment in a young adult fantasy genre that has recently been too overrun by the epic dragon/quest type of tale. 6/3/05 |
