George R. R. Martin

Jess: This is by far one of the most difficult series that I have read. Martin is an incredibly adept writer in most cases, creating an incredibly story with multiple viewpoints in a world similar to Medieval times. One problem: the books are long. If you try to read these all at once, like I did, you might get a little frustrated. The problem is that they are so good, you can't put them down. That also means you're stuck with the series for at least a week (if you're bored, and have nothing else to do). They're also incredibly depressing, so if you're looking for a happy ending, steer clear from these.

Despite all that, these books are quite good. Martin takes advantage of multiple viewpoints to create multi-dimensional characters. His storytelling is vivid and enthralling when it wants to be, and as suspenseful as any horror movie. This series is mainly about politics and war, but also has a smattering of romance and magic. This is truly an epic fantasy series, and I look forward to the next installment. 7/24/05
