Brandon Sanderson

Karen: "Elantris" is the debut novel of author Brandon Sanderson.  Although it came out in hardcover, it does merit the more expensive format.  The book is well written and very interesting.  It has the requisite, for me, romance, tied in with a fantasy of the political and religious varieties.

It follows three main characters with each chapter being told from one person’s point of view.  The romance was a little dry, especially since the characters don’t even meet until more than halfway through, and showed very little chemistry at first.  But on the whole, the only problem I had with this book was the nearly unpronounceable names.  You know, that type of fictional world where you question the pronunciation throughout and never quite manage to reassure yourself that you are right.  This always makes me a little embarrassed to talk about a book, however, if you can ignore the horrible words you will definitely enjoy "Elantris." 5/30/05

Jess: WOW. Its 1:30 in the morning, and I just finished this book. I've been reading a lot lately, and out of around the last 25 books I've read, this one did the trick. I could honestly stop reading fantasy now, and be happy. Although that won't happen, I will stop my prejudice against male authors (but I couldn't say no with a cover like this one).

Everything about this story is incredible. Not since Lord of the Rings has my imagination been able to run wild like it did with "Elantris." Its just different in every aspect than anything else out there, and in the best way possible. From beginning to end, this book will leave you captivated, with twists and turns all the way through (hold on to your seat!). I only have two complaints- in the beginning some things aren't explained right away, but its quickly amended, and the fact that this is a standalone. I'll have to disagree with Karen on the names- I've read worse, and I learned that I was pronouncing them correctly (its on his site).

The fact that this book is in hardcover should not dissuade you from buying it. I promise it is worth every penny. And a final note- thank you, Mr. Sanderson, for bringing your amazing talent and new life to the fantasy genre. 6/1/05
